Why Consistent Details Matter
Google compares the name, address, phone number and opening hours on your website with what it finds on your Google Business Profile, Facebook and online directories. When they all match, Google trusts the information and shows it confidently in search results and on Maps. When they disagree, your local ranking can suffer, and worse, a customer can arrive at a closed door or ring a dead number. Every mismatch costs you trust and business.
Where to Update Your Details
On a typical small business website, your contact details can appear in several places, so check each one:
The contact page: Open "Pages" in your WordPress dashboard, edit your Contact page, and update the phone number, address, email and opening hours shown there. See our guide on how to edit a page in WordPress.
The footer: Many sites repeat contact details and opening hours at the bottom of every page. These usually live under "Appearance" then "Widgets", or in the theme or site editor. If you cannot find them, they may be set in one place by your web designer, which makes updates quick for us to do.
The header: Some sites show a phone number in the very top bar. This is normally edited in the same place as the footer.
Your Google Business Profile: Sign in at business.google.com and update your hours and phone number there too, including special hours for bank holidays and Christmas. This is what most customers see first when they search for you.
Facebook and directories: Update your Facebook page and any directory listings such as Golden Pages so everything matches your website exactly, right down to the spelling of your address.
You need to know:
Set a reminder to review your details a couple of times a year, and always update them straight away when something changes. If your details appear in a part of the site you cannot edit yourself, do not worry.
